Lightning Bolt - "Wonderful Rainbow"
(Load Records)
Lightning Bolt have a problem. Basically, there's no way to package sweat, musk and thousands of watts of raw power and synergy onto a compact disc or piece of vinyl. For my money, Lightning Bolt are on the short list (you can count them on one hand) of absolute must-see live shows. The drawback to this, of course, is that the albums have such a high and in this case, nearly impossible standard to live up to.

But all of this is not to say that "Wonderful Rainbow" is a bad album. No, in fact, the exact opposite is true. The album is a fair, if somewhat inadequate, representation of what this Providence, RI duo sound like in concert -- ferociously propulsive drums racing with equally energized bass lines sent through various effects to form a crazy, melodic coherent mess. On the first couple of listens, I thought their prior album, "Ride the Skies", was a better effort but I hadn't heard that album in quite a while and when I listen to the two back to back, "Wonderful Rainbow" sounds more focused and stronger in general. There are moments when the duo get brutally repetitious but for the most part, they find the right grooves and ride them to bliss. For those who want to rock, 21st century-style, and be sure to mark your calendars when they come around again.
